Here is the Real Deal for Death Ride Training! John and I are doing the AMBBR around Tahoe on Sunday. Since we are in the area, we will practice our Death Ride fitness on Monday, starting and ending at The Carson River Resort. We are renting a cabin. Call (530) 694-2229 for availability. Jennifer will probably lead a DRT here in San Jose. We plan to get an early start, but it is negotiable. Please text or email if you plan to join us so we can make modifications together. The water options are limited, so you will need 2 one-liter bottles. There is water at the Fire Station at the East End of Monitor Pass, mile 20, and then at Alpine Lake about .3 miles past our turnaround at mile 64. 02-06-2025 06:00:00 02-06-2025 08:00:00 6 ACTC: Ultimate Death Ride Training 99 mi, 5 LM-M , 13,700 ft: Here is the Real Deal for Death Ride Training! We'll head over to Santa Cruz to take in some of the great trails through the redwoods. The route is all singletrack on some of the more popular trails. We should avoid the heavy beach traffic to and from Santa Cruz by riding during the week. Be prepared for roots, twisty trails and a few minor obstacles. There will are lots of options, so we can tailor the ride to participant preference. Be self-sufficient (no facilities) and ready to ride at 10:00. Meet at 9:15 am for 9:30 departure at the Congregational Church, (west parking lot on Leigh at Hamilton). We'll make our way to the San Tomas Aquino Trail, connect to the Bay and Adobe Creek Trails (great shorebird viewing), and return via the Stevens Creek Trail. This route has about 7 miles of dirt that is absolutely suitable for road bikes with 25s. Parts are a bit bumpy, but very ridable and not necessarily worse than some pavement around. Refresh and refuel at Shoreline Lake mid-ride (optional) and the Pruneyard (<1 mile from the start) after. Note that e-bikes are technically and stupidly prohibited in PA Baylands, but I'll be riding mine. As are all my rides, no one left behind. 09-06-2025 09:30:00 09-06-2025 11:30:00 6 ACTC: Monday Mixed Terrain- Palo Alto Baylands 47 mi, 1 LM-M , 408 ft: Meet at 9:15 am for 9:30 departure at the Congregational Church, (west parking lot on Leigh at Hamilton). I will lead the slower riders with the early start. Jennifer will list separately, starting at 8 am, for faster cyclists. This route is about as close as one can get without doing the actual DR. The long climbs and climbing per mile are similar to the DR if we analyze the RWGPS data from actual riders, which eliminates the artifacts. This ride has many "bailout" options, especially at the end of the ride. So you can push yourself to your limit and then limp back to the car. Go at your own pace and shorten the ride as needed. Back into the pain cave with a brevet-style double century training course. Meet at Keiser Park in the lot closest to Windsor River road (across from playgrounds); you may need to park deeper in the park. All are welcome, with a few notes: - While there will be generous regroups, this will be paced to finish in daylight; be prepared to be self-sufficient if necessary. - Numerous roads on this route have extremely poor, potholed , gravely pavement and Willow Creek is a dirt road (uphill); be careful! - Please email or text to inform me if you plan on joining. 15-06-2025 08:00:00 15-06-2025 10:00:00 6 ACTC: The Terrible 228 (KM) 142 mi, 5 MB , 11,800 ft: Back into the pain cave with a brevet-style double century training course. Mixed terrain ride to Laurel
9:30 AM
26 mi, 5 LM, 3000 ft
Billy Goat
Old Santa Cruz Hwy,Wrights Station
Let’s try this again!
Meet at the Lexington School upper (gravel) lot. We’ll climb OSCH, then descend to Laurel via Schulties Rd. Note that much of Schulties Rd is dirt - 28mm (or wider) tires are probably best, but not necessary. Laurel is the site of an easily accessible tunnel portal from the SPC railroad (~1888 - 1940).
We'll try to leave there on Redwood Lodge Rd, but if the bridge is still out, we’ll return the way we came, using Schulties Rd.
From Summit Rd, we drop to the site of Wrights, another old RR town. After climbing out of there, we'll stop at the Summit store for restrooms and snacks/drinks, then return to the school. Regroups at the top of all climbs and all bike types welcome. Bad air quality or rain will cancel - if in doubt, check the e-list on Monday AM. 16-06-2025 09:30:00 16-06-2025 11:30:00 6 ACTC: Mixed terrain ride to Laurel 26 mi, 5 LM , 3000 ft: Let’s try this again! Alviso Slough Trail
Meet in the west church parking lot, corner of E. Hamilton Ave and Leigh Ave, San Jose. We will ride up the San Tomas Aquino Creek trail, do an out and back on the levees (construction limits our ability to do a loop) and return via the Gaudalupe River Trail. About 9 miles of this ride are on hard-packed dirt but easily ridden on standard road bikes. Since that section is out and back, early turnaround is possible if it's uncomfortable (the first mile is usually the worst). Shorebird sightings and salt pond views are typically impressive. Regroups as necessary and as always, no one left behind. Optional food and drink at the Pruneyard less than a mile from the start. 16-06-2025 10:00:00 16-06-2025 12:00:00 6 ACTC: Monday Mixed Terrain - Alviso Levees 39 mi, 1 LM-M , 415 ft: Meet in the west church parking lot, corner of E. 2 Or More Trails
Easy, scenic, flat route that people can mostly ride side by side to chat. Starts at Plaza del Sol in Sunnyvale next to Sunnyvale Caltrain (there is a huge parking garage under Plaza del Sol if you need to drive to start) then goes thru Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Palo Alto, and Mountain View mostly on quiet streets and trails where we can ride side by side and socialize. Trails include Bol Park Bike Path, Bay Trail, short section of Stevens Creek Trail. Fibbar McGees is a great place on the Murphy Street plaza where you can eat and drink (lots of beers, etc) outside next to your bike. May not be as great as Park Street Hashery but it is pretty close :-) 17-06-2025 09:00:00 17-06-2025 11:00:00 6 ACTC: Sunnyvale Social Loop to Fibbar McGees 24 mi, 1 L-LM , 363 ft: Easy, scenic, flat route that people can mostly ride side by side to chat. Sunnyvale Social Loop to Fibbar McGees

May not be as great as Park Station Hashery but it is pretty close :-) 24-06-2025 09:30:00 24-06-2025 11:30:00 6 ACTC: Sunnyvale Social Loop to Fibbar McGees 24 mi, 1 L-LM , 363 ft: Easy, scenic, flat route that people can mostly ride side by side to chat. Ride Start/Finish: Fowler Creek Park on Altia Ave. This will be the last DRT before the real thing on July 12th! The forecast has a high of 84°F, but confirm on the "day of." Kincaid and Felter can get about 10 degrees hotter than the forecast temperature. Jennifer will lead the faster cyclists in front, I will lead from behind.
