Creativity and passion; you never know where they will take you. David will show examples of his inventions which are used at Good Karma Bikes, and also tell tales of his Goathead Project.

Life gets tougher. A couple years ago, a new goat across the valley butted Charlie into this laid back group. For this year, another new goat jumped in. We now have one tough gang. The route sheet does 'em all. You have the option of doing all, some or none. Another option is lunch in Boulder Creek. Directions from Los Gatos to the start/finish: take Hw 17 south to the Summit Rd exit. Loop over the freeway onto Summit Rd. Drive 2.9 miles and park on the left side at the park next to the old elementary school, which is across the road from the C.T. English Middle School.

China Grade isn't nearly as rural with Lower's patchwork surface resurfaced and Upper's tire thumping potholes filled. We'll still descend it twice - once to Jamison and then to Big Basin Park. Leaving the park on Escape Road will fulfill all needs for roughing it. Drive to the start/finish via Hwy 9 from Saratoga, crossing the summit and descending almost to highway 236. Park at the wide spot in the road before the intersection. A porta potty may be available, but play it safe - enjoy the memorable facilities at the Hwy 9 vista point a few miles up the hill. Better yet, patience brings many Big Basin relief options along with lunch at the park's general store.

Both nature and history buffs will enjoy this ride around a Bay Area treasure, the Alviso Slough. Waterfowl and critters; a ghost town (now more visible due to a newly opened trail); tales of a kidnapping, lynching and a ferry disaster provide interest. The 13 miles of slough trail are dirt, so cross bikes and mountain bikes are recommended, but a sturdy road bike will do.
