When I fi rst starting riding ten years ago,
I would be done in after 30 miles, unable
to function. It was hard to know what to eat
before, during, and after a ride: How to avoid
hitting a wall during a ride? How to improve
my next-day recovery? I had to fi gure out
what worked for me.
The beauty of bike riding for me is getting
to know my body and my mind. Working the
body and the mind together as a fi ne machine
is what keeps me challenging myself with
Endurance Sports Nutrition:
Eating plans for optimal training, racing and
recovery
harder and harder rides. Each year I grow
older, but I also grow stronger each year on
the bike.
I came across a book called Endurance
Sports Nutrition by Suzanne Girard Eberle,
which has been a great help. This book is not
only for endurance riding, but basic riding as
well. Some contents are: Endurance Nutrition
Checkup, Energy for Hardcore Training, Tim-
ing Fuel for Peak Racing, Supplements for

For the second year, ACTC members
generously contributed both funds and labor
to TWFK (www.turningwheelsforkids.org).
Our efforts helped provide new bicycles at
Christmas to children of low-income parents
in the Bay Area.
The TWFK BikeBuild2007 was held at the
San Jose Convention Center on December
15th. About 500 volunteers, including more
than 37 ACTC members, assembled over
1800 bicycles in less than 4 hours. The bikes
ranged from tiny ones with training wheels
to 26-inch-wheel mountain bikes for teens.
The fi nished bicycles were loaded onto trucks
furnished by the local charities responsible for
distributing them to families registered with
their organizations.
